April 18, 2012 - Poinsett Project: During… (by Mike Nice)

Furman Students and volunteers making a difference during their day of service

Last week, Furman University held a day of service to kick off the Poinsett Highway revitalization project.   After consulting with the community, a  group of about 700 Furman University students, faculty, staff, and volunteers from the community turned out in force to tidy up  along Poinsett Highway and some of the surrounding areas.   They trimmed, weeded, painted, removed Kudzu, brush and trash, mulched and landscaped.

April 17, 2012 - Poinsett Project: Before… (by Mike Nice)

This abandoned industrial building illustrates the worst of the area

The section of Poinsett Highway between Greenville and Cherrydale Point has developed a hard edge for a number of years:  a mix of industrial and abandoned and unkempt properties, along with regular businesses.   Because this stretch of road has the potential to be a gateway into the city of Greenville, Furman University has teamed up with Greenville County to revitalize the area.   The thinking is to make the highway and the surrounding communities into places people want to be, and investment will follow to fill the empty buildings because of the proximity to downtown – just a mile from Main Street.

Although the building in this picture will not have any immediate action taken, it is certainly on the list for redevelopment.   This introductory video gives some ideas that will be applied to improve the quality of life in those communities.

This is a mural by Rick Forest and can be found on the Buncombe St. Boy Scout Troop 9 hut in downtown Greenville behind the Buncombe St. Methodist Church. Following is a link showing Rick Forest when he started the Boy Scout mural. Also I have included a photo showing Rick posing with his mural.

Those following our photo blog will remember several post about Rick Forest’s art work.

April 14, 2012 - arrows (by Denton)

Arrows pointing downtown. This photo was taken by Denton Harryman.

The arrows, in this photo, all point toward downtown Greenville. I also like the architecture of the parking garage on the right. However mostly I like coming home after a week in Charlotte.

The bridge weighs 90,000 lbs and was assembled on site from 3 separate pieces.

This week, the Greenville Rec Special Olympics held the 2012 Spring Games at Furman University.   Here at the opening ceremony, the torch was just passed from the team in green to “Asia” to carry in front of the cheering crowd.   Previously, the torch had been carried by a number of police officers from the city of Greenville to the stadium at Furman University.
