something for everyone

Something for everyone in downtown Greenville. This photo was taken by Denton.

Actually Greenville works very hard to give downtown Greenville a family focus. However, it is a great place to enjoy a good meal so I assume this fella is looking for one of several sports bars

Families enjoying downtown Greenville. This photo was taken by Denton Harryman.

Greenville’s downtown is very family friendly. One often sees families with their baby strollers. In fact I think baby stroller sightings should be included in the leading index of financial recovery (smile).

Downtown films at the Peace Center

Downtown films at the Peace Center in Greenville. This photo was taken by Denton Harryman.

In addition to the symphony, ballet, broadway hits, and name drawing solo performances; the Peace Center also offers a weekly film series. It is a great place to enjoy a good film while also enjoying a glass of wine. After the holidays we are looking forward to catching the movie Mozart’s Sister.

The Peace Center

The constructon is coming along nicely at the Peace Center, Greenville’s performing art’s center. Personally I have not decided if I like the look of the new glass lobby and open expanse of concrete in front. However, I know I love the performaces at the Peace and I wish them all the best in 2012. You may remember these past photos of construction at the Peace Center and the Peace Center was all lit up with activity

Sunshine as seen in downtown Greenville. This photo was taken by Denton Harryman,

The short days of December bring photo opportunities I especially enjoy. The sun rarely rises above this level, the light is less harsh, and the sky is a vivid blue. Connie and I will be in Greenville for part of the holiday’s and I will share a few photos. We hope you had a wonderful Christmas with your family and friends.

Merry Christmas

This house in Mauldin has one of the most elaborate displays of any house in the Greenville area.   He graciously shares the lights with the public by allowing viewers to walk around among the display areas.   This year, there are more than 250,000 lights, and last year’s power bill for part of November and December was $2,600!

There are several themed areas – the pool is used both to reflect lights and support a floating Noah’s Ark.   Some of the lights are synchronized to music.   It will be open through New Year’s day.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Sterling Square

At this time of year, when a visitor to downtown sees this sight at first glance, they might think it is a nativity scene.  However, the structure was placed last summer to protect the artwork from construction damage during the building of Project One at the corner of Main and Washington Streets.

This corner, also called Sterling Square, marks the spot of many civil rights movements in the past.   These statues commemorate the students graduating from Sterling High School and stepping out into the world.
