Past on Present II

This is the other brick sculpture on the new CVS store on the McBee Street side.  This represents Vardry McBee, one of the “Fathers of Greenville”, along with his contributions to the city.   He donated land to establish many of the area’s first churches and the first female academy.  He was instrumental in moving Furman University to Greenville and built one of  the earliest grist mills on the Reedy River.

The new CVS on the corner of Main and McBee has a brick rendition of the previous building: the Kress “Five and Dime” store, finally demolished in 2001.

Milepost 28

This is milepost 28 on the Swamp Rabbit Trail.   Mile numbering begins with zero at the North Carolina border; eventually it is hoped that the Swamp Rabbit Trail will reach North Carolina.

Leaves on several trees in the Greenville area have started to turn into fall colors.

Rawlings Oil - back view

I found this old painted logo on the back of a building facing the Kroc Tennis courts.   That got me thinking …  was it a prop from a movie set? If not, what did it look like when the logo was first painted?  I found an old photo of the building in the Coxe collection of the Greenville County Historical Society.   At one time, there was a rail line along the side loading dock.

A full copy of the preview image below is available from the Greenville County Historical Society.

Now… Then.

Small Waterfall

small-waterfall

A small waterfall that feeds into the Reedy River just a short distance away. This nice little secluded area is located in the Cancer Survivors park found between Falls Park and the Governer’s School.
