May 30, 2008 - Freedom Weekend Aloft balloon landing

Freedom Weekend Aloft, balloon landing in Greenville, Sc. This photo was taken by Denton Harryman and posted at GreenvilleDailyPhoto.com on 5/30/2008.
At the end of our balloon ride we landed in a field behind these houses. Our balloon is the one being backed up. The inflated balloon, in the photo, landed shortly after we did. It was interesting to see how the crew walked the balloon between the houses, set it down in a cul-de-sac, visited with all the residents, and efficiently packed up. Gosh that must have been fun for the people in those houses to see all this. Gosh, the first of the thumbnails looks like it barely missed hitting those houses :-)

I live within walking distance of Heritage Park and got quite the show last weekend. It was really amazing - I got to help pull down one of the balloons (several landed in my neighborhood.) Maybe next year I’ll ride in one. :)

~tanty~, thanks. I tried to make each day represent a different aspect of the experience. The series ends tomorrow.

Zsolt, yes the balloons really are very large. I personally found it interesting how the walked these balloons between the houses when the balloons were much larger than the houses. Just proportioned differently.

Jim K, yeah at first there were a few neighbors and then by the time we left there were kids and parents everywhere.

ann in alpharetta, the balloons landed a good distance from the houses however I took the photo as the balloon was being walked into the back yard.

P, they loved it. There were big smiles and lots of cameras.

Kristi, it is great to hear from you. Imagine, you helped pull a balloon down. Very cool. I think the people on the ground had as much fun as those of in the air. On all the roads you could see cars following the balloons. Next year you really should consider the experience. It is a memory that will last a lifetime.

Talk about a great perspective, Denton, yours from the balloon was outstanding. I wonder if I could go for a ride in one with the help of my motion sickness bracelets?

About my Navy photos, I put the one with the sailors lining the deck first because you had mentioned how much you enjoyed such a sight. As the Kidd made its way beneath the Broadway Bridge, I could see white every so often and wondered, “What is that?” It took me a few minutes to grasp the reality of it, that even with a brisk, cool breeze, sailors stood there for I don’t know how many miles, as their floating home/workspace made its way to dock beside Tom McCall Waterfront Park. “Oh, boy,” I thought. “I’m going to get a photo for Denton!” And you’re so right about my memories of this whole adventure lasting and lasting. Plus I have my photos. I am just plain blessed.
