I’m pleased to share a photo showing some of the young people in Greenville. Unfortunately today’s photo also shows a common problem in downtown Greenville … Crossing the street when the crossing signal is red … I have even caught myself doing it … We all need to do better.

Hey, Denton!
When I started to read your post that “today’s photo also shows a common problem. . .” I thought you might mean the baggy jeans! ROTFOL. My husband tends to cross on red a LOT. I’m too afraid most times.
I put an update on my blog about my surgery. Thanks for sticking with me!!

If I tried to cross on red, a car would leap out of the bushes and mow me down. I’m not in that much of a hurry.

Admittedly, this is something that is a complete pet peeve of mine. As you know, Denton, I have two young children - a daughter that is 8 and a son that is 3. My wife and I work very hard as parents to set good examples for our children and we make an effort to be as explicity as possible about obeying traffic signals and pedestrian signals and why they are important.
I cannot begin to tell you how much it undermines our efforts when we are walking along Main Street in Downtown Greenville and stop at a crosswalk while other people walk right up and continue on across. Our kids look at those people and then look at us…and I’m sure that we must look like the silly ones (at times) to our kids while we stand and wait patiently for the signal to change. We, the adult parents, tell our kids that they could get hurt if they do not obey the signals…and we emphasize that they should do as we say for their own safety. Then, they see other adults crossing the street (often times holding up traffic to do so) while the signal says “don’t walk.”
Yes - this is something that many people could definitely work on in Greenville…it’s such a pedestrian-friendly downtown, yet the pedestrians have gotten a little full of themselves.

Greg: If I saw you crossing on red, I wouldn’t leap out of the bushes and mow you down, but I might give you a verbal lashing! :-)

~tanty~ thanks for your comment. I enjoy including people in my photos however it is not something I want to do every day. It good to mix it up. Also, I am trying to include photos which show the diversity which exits in Greenville. So I was very pleased to share this particular photo.
Chris, glad you are mending and that you dropped by to comment. Yes the baggy jeans get on my nerves however I have little room to complain given the outfits I wore as a kid. At one point, in my youth, the trend was to ware your jeans so long you walked on the cuffs. I don’t know I we keep from tripping.
Galley, yes it is dangerous as is the common practice of standing to close to the curb. I have seen the buses rush by at 20-30 miles per hours with people standing only a few feet away. I think stand back a couple of steps and waiting for the light is a very smart thing to do.
RestedTraveler, I absolutely agree. Unfortunately it is getting worse rather than better.
