Today’s photo is a commerce related post showing a model of the ship named Alice Bowater. Models of this ship and another named the Gladys Bowater reside in the office of the AbitiBowater building in downtown Greenville. Additional information and photos of the Alice Bowater and the Gladys Bowater can be found at the Bowater Steam Ship website. It is interesting to reflect on the history of commerce and how companies change, grow, and shift over time. These ships were built in England as part of a vast fleet of ships owned by the Bowater Steam Ship Company. Years later Greenville became the headquaters for Bowater which by then was a major pulp and paper company. Then more recently, resulting from a merger, the company headquarters has moved to Montreal.

Were you shooting through a glass case? I like ship models almost more than airplane models and car models. I really don’t know what as most of my shipboard experiences have either be related to being seasick or being dunked under the Pacific Ocean.

Great picture you have for us Denton, for a moment I thought it was a real ship. Today
I’m offering a Big Thank You for CDP support.
Galley said,
Wow, I never knew Bowater was once a shipping company.

This is really a beautiful shot you have taken, Denton. I love the perspective and the colors on the ship. Neat.

Abe, yes I took the photo through a glass case. The link in my post shows photos of the Alice Bowater taken during a hurricane. I know I would have been sea sick green at that point.
Curly, thank you and I was please to support.
Galley, I have pondered the subject and now think that Bowater may have owned a shipping company to support it’s pulp, paper, and lumber operations. I’ll try to get that clarified.
Lynette, thank you. Actually the photo has some significance to me given I have worked with Bowater for over 19 years. However, even though Bowater’s headquarters is moving to Montreal I will remain in Greenville so don’t worry daily photos of Greenville will continue. And in this day and age of remote support, via internet access, I will continue to walk to work in downtown Greenville. I just have to find a new office space.

Hi, I am the person writing the website about Bowater`s shipping company. I was lucky enough to be sent some photographs of the model of Alice Bowater at the Greenville office to use on my webbsite is there any possibility of having some pictures of the Gladys Bowaterr model. My Dad sailed with Bowaters for a number of years in the 1960`s as a deck officer. Thank you. Ian
