February 15, 2008 - 43 stars

There are 43 stars on this relic from the Greenville, SC Post Office build in 1890. This photo was taken by Denton Harryman and posted on GreenvilleDailyPhoto.com on 2/15/2008.
A plaque, next to this this shield, states the shield along with other displayed relics are historic records of the Heritage of Greenville. The relics were original part of the Old Post Office which I understand was constructed in the early 1890’s. The Post Office structure stood where the City Center building recently stood and has now been destructed. The plaque and relics were displayed on the wall of the City Center and I assume they will be prominently displayed in the future as well … The 43 stars represent the number of states in the US in 1890 when the Post Office was built.

Learn something new everyday… and today I learned that there were 43 states in1890. That’s an interesting color for a relic of the federal government.

It’s pretty. I like the color and the color of my anti-spam word is also purple :)

Denton, it seems to have been painted and I’m wondering if it is metal or some kind of plaster ornament? I love the oak leaves and wonder if the leaves on the right are bay leaves? Or what is the other kind of tree the state has on it’s shield? Cool to see this piece of history preserved.
