January 25, 2008 - Don’t Panic

Investors are urged not to panic in the newspaper delivered to a downtown location in Greenville, SC. This photo was taken by Denton Harryman and posted at GreenvilleDailyPhoto.com on 1/25/2008.
On my walk to work, Wednesday morning, I found the headlines in this newspaper interesting. As we all know there are concerns about recession and the experts are urging investors not to panic. In addition to this wise advice there was good news:

  • Clemson won
  • Diabetes is cured by obesity surgery
  • There were a couple of good movies this year
  • and most importantly it was wet enough to require a plastic cover when delivering the news paper

I think every issue of the Greenville News should have “DON’T PANIC!” on the cover just like the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.

Are you kidding me?

“Don’t Panic” is the dumbest and most irresponsible headline about the stock market I’ve seen yet. As soon as they print the word PANIC, it doesn’t matter what they put next to it. We read the word, and it gets burned into our cerebral cortex. It will actually have an adverse effect on investors.

Panic. Tsk… Boneheads.

“Stay Calm”, “Investors hopeful”, “weathering the storm”, or “Get ready to buy, buy, buy” would have been a lot more useful.

linker’s comment is pretty dead-on. :D

About news, have you heard about this French traider who would have made his bank (la Société Générale) lost 5 billions of euros? (my phrase seems to me a bit twisted, excuse me if it is not right…)

linkerjpatrick, too funny. I had missed the obvious tie to the “Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy”.

olivier, yes a less inflammatory headline would have been better. Hopefully I have not acerbated the problem by sharing the headline with the world.

I like your headlines much better.

“Stay Calm”, “Investors hopeful”, “weathering the storm”, or “Get ready to buy, buy, buy” would have been a lot more useful.

Alice, your English is very good and in some cases better than those of us for which it is our mother tongue. I often grow lax and my grammar or spelling is wrong. But in the end, given this is a blog, communication is the important part … yes the 5 Billion (euro) may has been all over the news here. He is called the 7 billon dollar man given the currency conversion … I suspect additional regulations will be the result.

Oliver I agree. All the panic going on is rather silly and does have the opposite effect. It’s just about as bad when my wife might say, “We need to talk” and that make me want to run away and not talk!” I’m actually hoping some of the stocks I’m invested in drop a bit more so I can buy more because in the long term I know I will come out ahead. Yeah, I’m a big fan of the Hitchhiker’s Galaxy stuff and remember listening to it on the radio when I was in high school in the 80’s on NPR. I often tell people it’s less sci-fi and more like a modern day Alice in Wonderland or Gulliver’s Travels especially with the way Vogons portray bureaucrats.

One neat thing about the Internet and especially things like blogs, forums, podcasts, etc. is just about anyone can be a Ford Prefect. Now if you excuse me I’m going to curl up with my towel.

If I were heavily invested I’d be getting pretty anxious these days.

Every newspaper is delivered in plastic, lol Imagine how it would scatter if it wasn’t - especially since they are thrown from a moving car.

Amber, our newspaper is hand carried to our front door and never wrapped in plastic … Of course that is inside a condo complex where rain is not a problem … Sad that papers a no longer thrown by a paper boy on a bicycle.
