January 3, 2008 - A mystery - Ambassador Hotel in Duluth Minn

A mystery, why is a sign for the Ambassador Hotel in Duluth Minnesota on an abandoned warehouse near downtown in Greenville, SC. This photo was taken by Denton Harryman and posted at GreenvilleDailyPhoto.com on 1/3/2008.
First let me say that I don’t have the answer to this mystery and I’m hoping a local reader might share some insight. The mystery, why is a sign for the Ambassador Hotel in Duluth Minnesota on an abandoned warehouse near downtown in Greenville … The sign in near intersection of Welborn and Hudson. You can see it when walking on Greenville’s multi-purpose path which starts at the Linky Stone Park and will eventually extend to Furman University.

I was an extra in Leatherheads for a day down in Ware Shoals but I think I remember seeing something somewhere about some game or team from Deluth. This sign looks fairly new so I bet it has something to do with the movie. The prices on it seem indicative of the 1920’s as well.

What a hoot… both running water AND telephones… old or new, the sign points to lots of CHANGE!

Happy New Year Connie! Seasons Greetings Denton!

Read your reply to my question on our forum. Ok, I’ll try and do a Mr.Cruise but the last time someone tried to scale the towers, he ended up getting arrested. Hmm…maybe I need to do a night-time shot. Let’s see. :)

Love always.

Ok, I found an article that pretty much confirms this as a Leatherheads set.

the “actual” hotel in Deluth was in Statesville, NC . boy talk about a space/time warp between Greenville, Statesville and Deluth! ;)

Great pic! I love it. Quite a funny and interesting sign living in the past! Almost an historical landmark. Now I can imagine that it will be difficult to get rid of it, no?
Our Best wishes for a Wonderful and Happy New Year.

well that is an interesting story and would have been very confused if it had not been for the article. The distance between the two cities is well beyond a half block.

I just saw the movie “Leatherheads” and yes, the sign is from the movie. The Ambassador Hotel, Duluth, Minnesota is a scene in the movie, although I don’t believe there ever was an Ambassador Hotel in Duluth. The movie takes place in 1925 and is about the Duluth Bulldogs professional football team. I am not sure if there ever was a professional football team in Duluth, but the University of Minnesota - Duluth teams are the Bulldogs. Since the movie was filmed in South Carolina — far cry from Duluth — I am pretty sure the sign and the fictional Ambassador Hotel go together. Loved the movie!!
