October 1, 2007 - Theme day - A cemetery or tombstone

The cemetery at Christ Episcopal Church in downtown Greenville, SC. This photo was taken by Denton Harryman and posted at GreenvilleDailyPhoto.com on 10/1/2007. Today is theme day and city daily photo blogs around the world are posting a photo of a cemetery … My photo is of the cemetery at Christ Episcopal Church in downtown Greenville. I went there looking for the grave of Vardry McBee, the father of Greenville. His tombstone is in the first thumbnail below. The cemetery at Christ Episcopal Church in downtown Greenville, SC. I love the dappled shadows falling across the tombstones - morning light, am I right?

Walking in this cemetery looks as though it could be a real history lesson of your area.

Beuatiful photos, Denton. I didn’t know there were such tombs in the USA (I mean with big crosses above them).

Great theme and photos. I love cemeteries — especially the old ones.

I think I saw this cemetery from a distance as we were driving around Greenville last week, and I thought to myself that I need to check it out further once I’m living there. You’ve now given me even more motivation to do so. Thanks!

The father of Greenville — thank you for sharing that significant grave and bit of history. I would have thought the “father” was someone named Greenville! You probably noted, too, the Civil War marker in the bottom of the main photograph. An old cemetery. (For the U.S. anyway) And I love the 3rd thumbnail. The flowers are so detailed!

I couldn’t agree with you more, Denton, about wanting no sculpture of myself over my grave some day–hopefully some day way, way off in the future. Thanks for coming to Portland (OR) Daily Photo.

Great photo captures for the theme….The father of Greenville, I too posted a photo from the cemetery named after the father of my city [I’m posting the meat and potatoes on it tonight]. This theme day is a rather interesting one, I’m sure many of us learned something new about our cities history.

I’m as surprsied to see the obelisques here as you were to see Paris on my blog ;-)

(I love how your thumbnails pop up, full with descriptions! Very fancy!)
