September 2, 2007 - A focus on the lighting at Coffee Underground

A focus on the lighting at Coffee Underground in Greenville, SC. This photo was taken by Denton Harryman and posted at GreenvilleDailyPhoto.com on 9/2/2007. This is a follow-up to yesterday’s photos about lighting in Greenville. Today’s photo shows the lights at my favorite Saturday morning activity. For those that follow GreenvilleDailyPhoto you know I am talking about bagels and hot chocolate at Coffee Underground. The person shown in today’s photo is Dana, the owner of Coffee Underground. I have a whole series of photos from coffee underground including a recent self portrait … When you reflect on it, do you have a favorite place? Not your home. But a place where you go out and you are most at home.

For me, these coffee places carry a “Cheers” like feel, where the barista knows your name, and how you like your beverage. :-)

My wife and I have one favorite place we go for meals. And we know the owners and people who work there and they know us.

Interesting picture and also neat self-portrait.

I like this photo…the lights and…wow..look again, there is a lady.

At home feeling?…101 diner…. I always run in to folks I know and they treat you just like family.

In answer to your question . . . will you accept “my back porch”. I go out there and enjoy the paper and the morning coffee on Sunday mornings when the weather is fine.

I have seen some older bars in NYC that still retain the light fixtures like these. Unfortunately, they don’t attact the local crowds like the new bars do. Hopefully, they get enough business to stay open.

Z, yes the certainly make one feel welcome and at home.

Abraham, knowing a customer’s name goes a long way toward creating loyalty.

Lavender Lady (Norma), in post processing, I played with the shadows, contrast, and highlights a little to get the effect … I will have to eat at the 101 with you the next time I visit Sequim.

Sunkyoung, trying new places is fun however the best experience always comes from what you know and are comfortable with.

Annie, in my home I feel most comfortable in my recliner. However, I can certainly see the appeal of a back porch.

Ming, I would hate to be in the food and beverage industry. The crowd always seems to migrate toward what is new. So when you find an establishment which has been in business for 20+ years they have to be doing something great.

Under Ground Coffee is a favorite of ours. We were bit by the “hoatie toatie coffee bug” 20 years ago in California and visit every brew house, in every town we’ve been, from Hawaii to Florida and now Greenville SC. I can’t say it is why we moved here, but we were already regulars before we were residents. I wish we did live close enough to walk in for breakfast every morning and share a table.
