I am intrigued by the landscaping at Falls Park in downtown Greenville. They often line walkways with rocks and flower beds. However, what intrigues me is that plants appear even under the rocks extending on to the walkway. Here is an extra photo showing the rocks, walkways, and plants.

Do you suppose that was planted – or did the seed blow in?
I really enjoy seeing unusual gifts of nature, such as beautiful things growing out of rocks. One of my favorite places is the Burren in County Clare, Ireland where this is common. It is an area that some suggest looks like a moonscape as it is almost totally rocks. There are many flora and fauna growing out of the rocks there.
I am always intrigued and sometimes astounding at how plants can tenaciously appear among concrete and rocks. Nature often thrives in unlucky places. Love the colour and texture of the rock, and the lovely plant colour enhances it.
As a gardener I have had to make decisions about when to leave the unexpected plants and flowers alone and when to rip them out. Perhaps there is a city gardener who makes similar decisions for Greenville. It takes an artists eye to see the possibilities (something I continue to try to develop).
That’s funny that you’d post this photo because just the other day, I noticed some petunias growing up against the building I work in, and it’s pavement all around. Piazza Bergamo, between Sassafras and the Gathering Spot.
Just moved to Greenville and started work downtown. I’ve been admiring your photos since I found out my husband and I were moving here.
That is a flower or a kind of vine that creeps everywhere once established. I have some here but the name slips my mind at the moment. Mine gets a small pink flower on it from time to time. I like your post today too.
Thanks for visiting my blog today and commenting about my dad’s clock.
I appreciate it a lot.
Up here in the tropics things grow everywhere!!. We have plants growing in gutters, stakes and fence posts sprout!!!!!
Apologies, but I just reread your comment and you mentioned the Movado watch with the dot at top. I had a black one years ago but the dot was a red ruby. I still have it here somewhere but I loved that watch and in spite of no numbers I was never late.
Leonda, I think these were planted which is what I find intriguing.
Ann, this may be less a gift of nature than a planned planting. I think the gardener is expressing his/her artistic side.
Kate, thank you.
Annie, you are a true artist.
Mary, thank you for your complement and frequent visits to our blog. I’ll look for the petunias you mention.
Abraham, thank you.
Jules, everything is relative but I have never heard of stakes and fence post sprouting. Maybe a small exaggeration.
This happens at my house but I have to be truthful and tell you that they are weeds! nice shot.
Denton, I do realize that this particular plant in the rocks and cement may have been created on purpose by someone, but it did remind me of the many occasions where nature did the creating. Either way it is interesting.
a gardener, specially a landscaper should be an artistic coz landscaping is all about art. And that plant under the rock is not accidentally been placed there. A landscaper must think of things that will attract people. Thats a part of their job. How boring will it be if everything is in its place. And see, thats the main reason, to attract us with an intreguing look, will it bother you to look on that arrangement if its not new to your eyes? well, i dont think sooooooo……..
