July 29, 2007 - Carving a bear

Carving a bear while enjoying sitting outdoors on Main Street in downtown Greenville, SC While walking down Main Street recently I found this artist carving a bear. As you can see he was enjoying the weather setting outside at Port City Java. I find it wonderful that one runs across so many unexpected scenes on Main Street.

Wood carvers are very talented artists. Did you get to see the finished product?

Yes I agree Kate - it would be great to see the finished product. I love how some artists are quite happy to work their art in public - it is a great lesson for those us who find these talents quite amazing.

I have just left a late note on your previous post - somehow I missed it with the time differences!!!

I bought a wood carving kit like that once. It rusted before I ever got around to using it.

That carving process brings back a lot of memories. I used to do that and still have a number of carvings I did. I even did a bear. I just saw or took down some primitive carvings of Kentucky Hillbillies. They must be 40 years old.

Nice photo.

amazing… sculptors are magicians as far as I’m concerned. Great photo.

I am amazed that he can “see” the finished project in his mind and then make it happen.

Every time I am in Greenville, like yesterday, I have a strong sense of possibilities for my own creative path. I am not normally the kind of person who likes walking in the rain, but have learned it depends on where it is. I didn’t care that it was raining as I walked downtown Greenville yesterday. And it reminded me of the time I was in Paris…the first day there it was raining and I didn’t care. I was walking along the Champs Elyse and have a great photo of it to remember it by…not that i need the photo to remember it.

Kate, sorry but I did not see nor take a photo of the finished product. I should have asked him if he had a web address where he sells his art. I will next time.

Jules, art performances are becoming very trendy. Remember my past photos of Ric Standridge and his Love show presentation where he painted 20+ pieces of art in front of an audience. Also, I previously posted a photo of Jared Emerson painting at the Cazbah restaurant. Not to forget Doug Young who often does performance sculpture in front of an audience.

Steve, my problem would have been a failed attempt had I purchased a wood carving kit. Actually as a young child I carved several cars and ran then in the Soap Box Derby.

Abraham, memories are the rewards of a life lived well.

Rich, I think all artist are magicians. I especially am amazed by those sculpting from rock.

Lavender Lady (Norma) I have heard that wood sometimes offers guidance to a sculpture in the grain and flaws which they have to work with. I assume the same is true on a smaller scale with rock.

Ann, you really need to move to Greenville … Thanks for all your positive comments about our wonderful city.

Oh how I want to move there to Greenville. However, after moving to CA Sept. 2005 then back here to GA Febr. 2006 and all the money spent, etc. I don’t have the finances to make a move now.
Long story that I won’t bore you or your readers with. However, I do believe that when the time is right everything will fall into place for me to make the move. Thank God I am close enough to at least take the occasional day trips there and get my large dose of peace, tranquility, and joy :-)

That is really cool! I admire his ability to see beyond and into the block of wood!

The carving looks like a beaver on a log, not a bear.
But if the artist said it was a bear, OK!

I don’t think it looks like a bear either, but I admire the artist being able to do his thing in the public eye and enjoy the weather and downtown Greenville at the same time. I can’t wait to make the move and am hopeful that the new environment will stir up some of my own creative juices. If nothing else, I KNOW that photo opps abound in and around your wonderful city. You’ve made that quite evident.
