I heard a story, on A Prairie Home Companion by Garrison Keillor, claiming that corn fresh from the field was better than … well you know what I mean (blush) … Anyway I’m not sure I agree however the corn was very fresh at the Saturday Market in downtown Greenville. Click here for a view of activity at the market … Other cities around the world have shared open air market scenes. Following are a few:
- Rabaul (Papua New Guinea) by Jules
- Montpellier (France) by Marie
- Mainz (Germany) by JB
- Penang (Malaysia) by Teresa
- Sharon, CT (USA) by Jenny
- Athens (Greece) by Ovelikios

Corn, fresh from a field, sounds wonderful. Well, as you say, if it IS fresh. I’d forgotten corn – not something I see often in France but have happy memories of eating it -on-the-cob and drenched in butter, as a child. Thanks for the memory! And thanks for mentioning Menton DP in relation to markets. This is a lovely idea to mention other city blogs covering a similar subject.
Love that old tree, with stunning roots, you posted the other day.
Some of the best corn I’ve ever head is in the USA… Nice shot Denton.

of course those are better compare to those in market.
When it’s really fresh you can just eat it right off the cob, no cooking required. Delicious.
Eat the corn, then take the leaves to the “blush”.
Love your market shot Denton – nice colours and textures. I buy corn at our market too and this could have been taken in PNG!!!
Thanks for the mention – I think it is such a great idea to share topics – it is such a special way to learn about the world and to realise that even though we are different there is so much that binds us together!!!!
I only got downtown yesterday just as they were closing down for the day. But at least i was there in plenty of time when i visited 3 weeks ago. Some lovely stuff. If i lived there I would have bought more than i did :-)
What Garrison Keillor said was the “corn fresh from the field was better than sex”. Acually in the US the phrase “something is better than” almost always ends in sex. And is almost always never true.
Thanks for the link Denton! I’m not a fan of corn, but this photo is very appetising!
