June 14, 2007 - What is blue and prickly all over?

What is blue and prickly all over? The answer is, a flower downtown Greenville, SC I would like to say I am running a contest asking for guesses on what type of plant this is. However, I have no idea so I could not declare a winner. So share your knowledge or have fun and give it a guess … This plant is at the entrance to Falls Park in downtown Greenville.

Though a bit short in the flower, it reminds me somewhat of a thistle. Too short though. Nice photo.

If you have not seen a big ant then it might be worth seeing my post this morning.

I am with Nathalie. We don’t grow gorgeous flowers as easily here in the Great American Desert (or is it Dessert?)

Super photo — love the color and details. Looks like some kind of thistle.

It looks like a thistle, I believe it is the official flower of Scotland and is often seen in their shields and crests.

I heard about your site today, so I checked it out. I love the concept, and as a fellow photo hobbiest, I can really appreciate the effort. One suggestion, reduce the size of your copywrite text on the picture. It cheapens your site, and makes it look like you are entirely for profit. If you want to have people look at the site to get a feel for Greenville, then don’t block the picture with ownership text. Just a suggestion.

It looks like a thistle but I’m it is not. I photographed an identical plant just the other day in the local park, I’m afraid I have no idea what it is.

Oh, this is tough. Using Google images both guesses, decorative artichoke and thistle, look very close.

Barb, thank you. I was pleased with the macro view of the plant.

Nathalie, you convinced my sister Leonda and in my book that makes you a clear winner. Send me an email with your mailing address and I will send you a postcard from one of my photos of Greenville. My email address is Denton at GreenvilleDailyPhoto dot com.

Abraham, thank you. Several others suggested thistle as well … Your photo of the ant and the aphid was outstanding. If any of my readers have not visited to see the photo I recommmend they click on over.

Lavender Lady (Norma), thank you. Leonda agreed with Nathalie so a winner was chosen.

Leonda, thank you for your expertise … Desert or dessert? I do remember seeing a map stating that the “Great American Desert” is “un-inhabitable by man or beast”.

Lessie, yes the color was attractive. But what I like is the contrast of what I see as beauty and ugly in one plant.

Susanstcyr, that would be fun if it was the official flower of Scotland given Greenville just celebrated a Scottish festival.

Kirk, thanks for the suggestion and for visiting. Check out the effort Jing, from Shanghai daily photo, goes to incorporate her copyright into the photo. I often visit her photos just for the fun of searching for the copyright.

Curly, you know more than I because I had zero idea until the guesses started being posted.

Chad, thank you.
