April 11, 2007 - A condo essential

A condo essential, poubelle de table, suggested by Rachel Ray. Given our blog is about living downtown I am sharing a photo of what we have found to be a condo essential. Given our condo has only one sink we find a small bowl to collect trash while cooking is essential. In French I understand it would be called “poubelle de table”. I mention this because my wife attributes the idea to a cooking show host called Rachel Ray. However, I think the idea was one we learned 20+ years ago when we lived in Belgium.

Ann asked about the countertop. So I have included a photo of the kitchen. The countertop is granite which is very nice however as the photo shows and the post shares there is one sink. In all of our past homes we have had two sinks. This was one of the challenges resulting from downsizing.

I do exactly as you do. I even have a metal bowl like yours. What do you do with the foodwaste? I put mine in the compost.

Jing, your are welcome. It was a fun post.

Kris, good minds think alike. In my experience two sinks is the norm in the US and only in small spaces such as condos have they switched to one sink.

Ann, to answer your question about the countertop I have added a photo link and an explanation to the post.

Rudy, you are welcome.

Lessie, thank you.

Annie, you compost. Good for you. Sadly living in a condo this is not a serious option for us … My sister, Norma who publishes Sequim Daily Photo does a great job of composting.

You are such a dear, Denton. The really good composters is Leonda. that barrel thing George made her..I’m thinking about how I could import him and his tools for awhile. Ahh. probably not cost effective.

“La poubelle de table” sounds so much more elegant than Rachel’s “garbage bowl” ;-)

Zsolt, yes they are sweet. We use these tomatoes in our omelette and they have the added benefit of holding their juice.

Lavenderlady, (Norma) I remember your composting. I’ll have to make more of an effort to notice Leonda’s composting efforts.

Isabella, yes French is a beautiful language even when talking about a garbage bowl for the table.

Wow! Denton…love the kitchen counter and cabinets and appliances. Thanks for the added photo.
I must say that the closeup of the countertop with the food on it looks like bits of earth? or bits of something. Really cool!
