Recently in the Greenville News there was an article about a hugh new real estate development. The article says this 850,000 square foot building will be demolished to make way for the development … I sure hope I understood the article correctly and I’m not making a statement in error. Can any local readers confirm this building is to be demolished?

it’s such a waste to demolish it when it is still so new…wasting money and resources!!

This doesn’t surprise me. I believe this development (or one like it) has been in the works for some time. At one time, this was the preferred site of the new Greenville Braves stadium/entertainment/retail complex. Fortunately for us, the Braves moved to Mississippi and we now have West End Field and the Drive. It is a shame that this recently-converted office space that was once warehouse space would be demolished. I watched as that building (along with everything around it) was transformed over the past few years. What really dismays me perhaps beyond anything else is the amount of additional traffic this could potentially bring to an already congested area of Greenville.

what?!
we would love to receive this impressive brand new structure, if it is possible to ship it here !

It looks too new and modern to be demolished. It sounds like “restless traveler” has some information on it. PS. I love your new Avatar. Connie’s hat is very stylish!

I still remember when it was the Celanese (sp?) plant many, many years ago!
I don’t know why this building never really got the tenants it deserved. It’s a beautiful building, but it’s never seemed to be more than 1/4 full. Sounds like the kicker for tearing down this building is money. The new developer is going to be pouring tons of money right there, and city and county council loves nothing more that big ol’ dollar signs.
*sigh* I’m going to have to give up on Woodruff Road altogether.

Denton, I know it’s hard to believe but this is nothing. My son living in Dubai tells me they are developing so fast that they build a major road clover-leaf intersection and then knock it all down to re-configure in a matter of months! Interesting to see the pear petals!

I love your pics of Greenville. It’s nice to see one out of the downtown area - Gville is so big!!

Actually this building is quite old albeit remodelled. It was Fiber Industries for many years. There will be at least 2,500 residences and it will be a self contained community. This will surely add some traffic to Woodruff Rd. However the City is going to improve roads from the other direction connecting this site, so you really would not have to travel Woodruff Rd. The traffic thing is getting a little tiring. Greenville continues to grow and traffic comes with it. Maybe the new rapid transit plans will help.

Thanks for your comments everyone. I was especially pleased to see an increase in comments from local readers.
Zannnie, as Steve points out the building is actually relatively old. It was remodeled a few years ago which make it look newer than it is. However, I agree that demolishing a building this size is questionable.
RestedTraveler, in the article I link to Greenville’s mayor is quoted as saying “The overarching goal is to get people off of Woodruff Road and to provide alternatives”. Apparently he feels the alternative road being planned will accomplish this. I think maybe 10 alternative roads will be needed.
Kris, it might be a little hard to ship. 850,000 square feet is very large.
Kate, thank you for your complement on our avater. Connie said the season had changed and we had to change outfits.
Carla, thanks for the information. Apparently they have to asses potential “environmental issues” given a fibers plant was in this location for many years. I remember the Celanese well. In fact it feels like only a few years have past since it was replaced by this office.
Chuckeroon, yes Dubai is building rapidly. I understand they plan to do whatever is necessary to insure the tallest building in the world is in Dubai. It must be nice to see Bluey’s daily photo given your son lives there.
Kristi, thank you.
Steve, I really appreciate the detail you provided. I’m sure our out of town readers appreciate the detail as well.
Fabrizio, thank you. I was pleased with the photo and a couple of years from know it may be one of the few memories we have of this building.

PS: Why did no one comment on my car or how warm it must be to have the top down at night?

I beg your pardon? This is such a stunning building and it’s going to be torn down? I never can understand the planning commission of any city.
Now hurry up and post your mailbox.
