This old warning siren overlooks Greenville and hints at times gone by. The story I was told is that the old siren dates back to the cold war. I have no idea if it is true but I enjoyed the story.

Nice photo, you have inspired me to take pictures of Greenville also. Where was this taken?
belle photo et la lumiere est superbe .bon weekend
beautiful photograph and the light is superb. good weekend
Did you take this photo on top of the Poinsett? When I was in highschool in the late 80’s we would go into the abandoned hotel in the middle of the night… lots of fun but not the smartest thing to do. I remember seeing the old siren on top of the hotel and also remember a room near the roof that was fool of boxes, hundereds of them, that had “civil defense” food and supplies in them. It was like stepping into the past. These boxes were meant to be used in case of a nuclear attack.
Great pic by the way.
Here is a link that speaks aboout another find similar to mine at the old Poinsett Hotel.

Mike, I’m flattered. You should also check out the Greenville photo of the day thread at Urban Planet. In addition there are several flickr photosets about Greenville. My favorite are by Rested Traveler. Also, be sure and click on the Global Daily Photo Map which is another website I publish.
Olivier, thank you. However, I have to admit the lighting is curtsy of PhotoShop.
Rick, yes we have all done foolish things in our youth. That is very interesting about the “civil defense” supplies. It supports the story I had heard that the siren was from the cold war period. Also, thank you for the link you provided.
Lovely composition…well captured shot!
Denton, just noticed this photo a few days late, but I am guessing that it’s the one at the Poinsett. I can remember as a kid in elementary in the 60’s in Greenville, they would blast that thing and we would crawl under our desks. That thing had to be really loud since I went to school right off Augusta Rd, a few miles away. Great photo. Speaking of the Poinsett, have you ever seen the huge stone water fountain that they moved from the Poinsett to across the street, right at Soby’s ?? I remember that as well…. ahh… good memories !!
Ah, nice chrysler air raid siren! Very rare. Loudest siren in the world! You are lucky to live in a town with one of them! Has it been taken down?
