March 22, 2007 - A bachelor’s supper

A Condo in Greenville, SC My wife is traveling. She is at a conference so I’m “batching” it this week. As a result I chose to share what a bachelor’s supper looks like. Also, this gives me an opportunity to show how space is utilized in a 1,000 square foot condo in downtown Greenville. Our bedroom is to the right. We have an office on the left. The room shown serves as kitchen, dinning room, and living room. We are especially pleased with hardwood floors and the 12 foot ceilings. Our two daughter’s photos are on the walls … PS: I had grilled steak, cottage cheese, and tomatoes for supper. What do you eat when your loved one is out of town?

Ann asked if we had windows in our condo … Yes, we have windows in each of the three rooms in our condo. The bedroom, office, and living area. We purchased and installed the plantation shutters to give us privacy. Following are a few photos which give you a feel for the windows. First, a photo of my wife saying welcome to our condo on the day we purchased it, next the furniture on our condo balcony which the windows behind the shutters opens on to, and lastly the view the courtyard looking our the bedroom window. I am surprised by how few photos I have of our condo. I will have to fix that.

You put together a nice spread! I’m ashamed to admit I eat frozen pizzas and fries when my SO is away.

I have often been impressed with the design and conservation of space I’ve seen in Scandanavian and other European countries, and it looks as though USA is finally getting the picture. Was downsizing difficult for you?? We are contemplating the same thing, and somethings are going to be difficult to eliminate. Food while I’m alone here in Maz is nothing to write home about or photograph, but I am forcing myself to eat more of the wonderful vegetables here. I’m truly a social being and prefer meals with others!!

This room is really a “home” room. Warmy, comfy something that invite to say “home sweet home”. Then I like technically the photo but this is secondary to what it let feel

I like the layout of your home and except for the higher ceilings, it reminded me of the home my wife and I started out life together, living in. That was over 52 years ago. Imagine that. Marriage to us was a lilfetime committment and fortunately, our marriage worked. LOL

I like you photography.

I like the utilization of space. Sometimes it seems that the more space you have, the less thought you put into utilizing it. Perhaps I should move out of the suburbs and downsize so I utilize it better, myself. I usually dine on protein shakes and frozen entrees while Mrs. RT is away. Oddly enough, I’m the one that’s out of town at the moment and I’m still eating the same things.

amusing shot Denton….I particularly like the careful placement of The Remote.
Your dinner looks a lot more well-balanced than mine when Deb is gone. Usually it’s whatever is in the freezer-preferably round, preferably pepperoni!

Your home looks warm and wonderful. Steak! Now I know what I am going to have for supper tonight. When my wife is out of town I normally order a pizza or pick up some fast food.

I’m proud of you for coping so well ;-)
As far as the condo goes - 1000sf, high ceilings, wood floors, downtown location - that exactly describes our once apartment in Paris! And we had the time of our lives there…

12 foot ceiling, wow that’s rare these days !

My loved one is Bear, (my Llasa Apso) is always here :-) …so he eats while I eat :-)
I would love to have wood floors…maybe in the next place i live … since I don’t really care for living in Atlanta. Do you have many windows in your condo? I couldn’t see any from your photo.

PS. Maybe behind those little shutter is a window?

Z, yes I enjoy a good steak. The only think missing was a bottle of wine. My second night without the missus I ate take out Chinese food which is not one of her favorites. My stomach tells me I am too old to eat pizza.

Kate, downsizing was not that hard for us. Oh sure there was some trauma and it is a lot of work giving things to United Way or the kids. However, we feel it was great. The move downtown was the best move we have ever made.

Fabrizio, thank you. The photo was not one of my best however every photo does not have to be great if what you are conveying is of interest.

Abe, our first home was even smaller. Over the years we have lived in many homes of varying sizes. When living in Belgium we lived in our largest home in what was referred to as the “American ghetto”. Our most recent home prior to our condo was 3000sf. So the move to a condo was certainly a downsizing life event … Congratulations on your 50+ years of marriage. My wife and I are enjoying our 36th year of marriage … I’m flattered you like my photography.

RT, we gained a sense of satisfaction from downsizing. In addition to the condo we use only one car instead of two. We also recycle more now than in the past. But don’t expect me to place stickers on my BMW Z3 anytime soon.

Sophieandersen, yes the remote was where I wanted it. When we purchased the TV one of the requirements was that it swivel such that we could watch the news or Entertainment Tonight (ET) from the table.

Pastorrick, fast food has been one of my weaknesses in the past. I’m trying to do better.

Isabella, your apartment in Paris sounds great. Years ago, we lived in Brussels and traveled to Paris regularly. Paris was one of the cities which exceeded my imagination. Also, living an urban lifestyle has its challenges which we feel are greatly outweighed by the benefits.

Kris, yes 12 foot ceilings and in a new construction condo. We have not noticed an increase in cost to heat the condo. However, it would be hard to measure given the smaller size compared to our previous home. What we have noticed is a decorating challenge. Specifically, my mother thought me to hang photos at eye level. That does not work as well with tall ceilings. It is not shown in this photos however what we have found in the other rooms is that we are hanging pictures above pictures and it looks fairly good with the tall ceilings.

Ann, please say hello to Bear. Yes, we have windows in each of the three rooms in our condo.

Thanks Denton for the response. FYI…I sent you and actual email on March 14th, but it may have gotten lost in your spam :-)
I would like to talk with you and Connie more about living in Greenville. I have been in Atlanta since 1990 except for a recent 5 month time in Napa, Ca. …sadly i am back here in GA where I have never felt at home.
I am just amazed at how friendly EVERYONE is in Greenville, and I LOVE walking around downtown, the riverwalk, the park, and talking with everyone I meet.
You can check out my web page at http://www.authorsden.com/annmarquette - and let me know if you ever got the email i sent.

Darn it, Denton! Now you show me that you’re as regular as any other guy left alone. Is there no-one left I can look up to now? I hope you cooked the steak for no more than 3 mins each side and let it stand COVERED for a maximum of 4 mins. That’s 10 mins NO MORE! Glad to see the V8……..goes with the Z3, eh? I regret that there was no tomato salad in sight.

Oh, dear…I just re-read it. Tomatoes are there…OK.
