My wife and I made a quick trip to Atlanta yesterday. I took this shot of the sun setting as we left Greenville driving west on Interstate 85. Driving in Atlanta traffic always reminds me how lucky we are to live in Greenville … Please accept my apologies for setting such a bad example. Clearly taking a photo while driving is foolish.
Following is a list of photos taken using foolish, risky, even dangereous techniques. If you have examples let me know and I’ll add them to the list.
- my favorite was when Barcelona [Bob] took a photo riding a bike at night in traffic
- Isabella from Naples FL photographes an alligator without a zoom lens
- Midnitebara from Akita Japan takes a series of photos in the red light district
- Eric and family, from addGreenvilleSC, hiked on Bulls Island which has “highest concentration of alligators in the US”
- Zsolt, from Budapest, taking a photo while driving (sounds familiar)
- David, from Sarasota FL, hung over an open balcony six stories up to take a photo of a mural hard to photograph from other angles
- Chris, from Newscastle, shared a photo taken behind the wheel while driving at night in the rain
- Dustin from Flagstaff, AZ (USA), shared a photo of his wife ‘canyon jumping’ at the Grand Canyon
- anonymous from Rabaul (New Guinea) who climbed an erupting volcano to take photos of the fireworks
- Abraham Lincoln takes a photo of himself and his car while driving 65 miles an hour

I once went to the middle of a busy street to take photos of the city street workers. When done, I stepped back to return to my car and was nearly run over by a car zooming past the work zone.
Wonderful shot!
the reflections of the sunset in the front of the car is beautifully captured.
Here’s one. My wife, kids and I were hiking on Bull Island and came up on this guy about 30 feet away. As we moved a little closer, we noticed there were actually about 30 of them all hanging out just waiting for something tasty to come along. http://addgreenvillesc.blogspot.com/2007/02/bull-island-sc.html#links
You should’ve just continued South until you got to Naples!
I agree about the dangers of my zoomless photography. I also think that it is a moral obligation of those who run the DPB site to provide us with all the necessary equipment to do our “job” safely ;-)
Yes you are blessed to live in Greenville. I have been through many times over the years since I came to Atlanta in 1990. Last year after returning here from living in Napa, CA for a few months…don’t ask why i came back :-) long story…I have been to Greenville – downtown, a few more times and LOVE it. What an amazing place to walk and dream and write, meet new people, etc. The traffic in atlanta is one of the big reasons i don’t want to live here…but here i am for now.
At least when the gas price is not so high, as it is today, i can take a day trip to downtonw Greeneville to find peace and joy, friendly people, the waterfall, river walk, park, and friendly people (yes I included this twice to make a point). Every time I have been to Greenville all the new people i meet are so friendly, the people i visit again are so very friendly…I keep asking “what is it that makes everyone in Greenville SO friendly?” No one seems to be able to give me an answer, except the occational “I don’t know” with a smile.

Carol, yes taking photos can be dangerous. My wife has suggested I were an orange vest.
Kalyan, thank you.
Eric, after seeing your photo I doubt if I will visit Bull Island. By the way, I really like your photos.
Isabella, Eric has your alligator photo beat.
Ann, thank you. Naturally I agree with everything you say. In general I think the friendly nature you found in Greenville is Southern hospitality.
Hi Denton, I’m just popping in to say hi to you and Connie….Been too busy settling in and going on business trips since I moved to Shanghai and I miss browsing DP blogs. Anywaz, have a good Sunday :)
Hello Denton. Its good idea to collect these risky ideas. Its really a bit dangerous to take photos while driving.:)
Denton, the kind of friendliness you have in Greenville is NOT the same here in Georgia.
I wish I could get to Greenville every week :-)
I have been looking for work again and not getting anywhere here in the area i am in. I am even looking in Greenville and feel that if i am meant to live there, something will come up :-)

Denton, I rose to your challenge, literally. From six floors up hanging over the edge. Check out my Risky Painting photo at http://sarasotadailyphoto.com Well, actually I took this shot a couple weeks ago, so the risk wasn’t really in response to the challenge. Just could resist the play on words or making you wonder what foolishness you might have started!
Now ypu’ve given me a challenge I can’t ignore: risky photos! Oh boy! Still stalking green lizards like Isabella’s with zero luck: only dead geckos. But one never knows when that right photo op will come along…and when it does, i will think of you. :-)
Just came from your comment on Abe’s blog – It seems I take a few risks by photographing in places where I’m apt to be mugged – of course, I only learn about these dangers from Tom Wigley who points out the danger later.
