February 5, 2007 - The Women s Club

The Women's Club in Greenville, SC This last weekend, while on a walk, I found the Women’s Club. Actually I was a little surprised because I thought I had seen all of the buildings downtown. A plaque outside the building said the club opened in 1949. The plaque goes on to say the house was originally owned by the Beattie family.

Following is some additional information I found about this historic house.

This is an awesome house! I think it would make a great Bed and Breakfast!

That’s a nice white building, it would be great for B&B, I agree!
Do you know what kind of activities happen inside?

The arches on this house are so intricate and unusual. Cool.

Ah, you’ve reminded me of the Women’s Club here in Little Rock. I should go take a photo of it to post on my blog.

I wonder if this might be a good theme day idea sometime - women or men’s clubs around our respective cities.

The anti-spam word was “dramatic” and that just about sums up this building!

It is a beautiful building! I can imagine there are great things taking place inside…I wonder if they offer cigars like men’s clubs?

Helen, yes it is an impressive building.

Dsole, sorry but I have little information about the clubs activities. I assume they are a charitable civic organization contributing to the improvement of the community as many women’s clubs are. The one thing I know for sure is there was a sign in the window announcing a Valentine Dinner complete with a social hour, dinner, a cash bar, and a Champaign toast.

Olivier, yes clubs reserved for women are relatively common. Some are charitable civic organizations while others are professional organizations working to improve the professional opportunities for women. In my experience when a splendid building such as this is involved the club is normally a charitable civic organization.

Lessie, yes the arches are very intricate. On the Greenville Libraries historical sites page they say “The two-story Italianate house is one of the oldest structures in the city”.

Blueboat, yes very Southern. However the experts say it follows Italianate style of architecture

Annie, I look forward to your sharing a photo of the women’s club in Little Rock. I’m not sure Greenville has any Men’s clubs any more. There certainly were many in the past however that glass ceiling has been broken.

Curly, thank you.

Norma, no way. Greenville is now smoke free.
