The last time I mentioned the liquor laws in South Carolina, Eric from the Paris Daily Photo got a good chuckle. Also, as a follow-up to yesterday’s photo about smoking laws, I thought I would share this sign about liquor laws. Although the laws appear restrictive we don’t have to look far to buy the wine we enjoy. Also, the City of Greenville allows licenses to sell alcohol on Sunday.

And do you think people really “object”?
Meg said,
I was going to ask exactly what Michael asked. Do they?
Ruth said,
In our college town, people have objected, believing there are too many opportunities for students to get drunk and we don’t need any more.

At first I was like “What?! this would never work in France”. And then I realized that we have what we call “Public Enquireries” based on the same principle. Nor for alcohol though, but for big public constructions for instance. I honestly don’t think people really write but it’s good to have the possibility to do so.

Michael and Meg, yes people do object. In fact I attended a meeting recently where a gentleman presented a fairly solid case for spacing out drinking establishments rather than having them concentrated in one area.
Ruth, thinking back on my college years I certainly did not need another excuse to drink. If there was not a local club then that presented an opportunity for a road trip.
Eric, public comments are allowed for public construction here as well. Public hearings are held as well. I have attended one such hearing and much to my surprise there was a direct impact from the public input.

When I read these posts, it reminded me of “dry” and “wet” counties that you and I are familiar with.
