September 12, 2006 - Smokestacks

« day before | today | day after » Smokestacks in Greenville, SC A while back one of the daily photo bloggers, Barcelona [Bob], asked the question “what makes a city”. There were many thoughts on the subject and I came down on the side of commerce. This weekend I took a drive around Greenville and captured a few photos on the subject and well share them over the next few days … From today’s photo you can see Greenville has a manufacturing past. In fact Greenville was once known as “The Textile Capital of the World”. Sadly the textile industry is not what it was in the past and as a result Greenville has a few mills which have been demolished as shown here.

Chimneys look rally great, it’s a shame they can’t be restored.

I think everybody should share some photos of the places that are forgotten and became dumps, unfortunately.

I know that some of these old mills that have been converted to other uses. Are there still others in the area that are vacant and could be rehabbed and converted?

I grew up in a “mill town” in the northeast. When I was young, everyone’s dad worked in the “mill” but by the time I graduated high school most of the mills gone–some of the buildings were just abandoned or ruined like your picture and others were “re-purposed”.

Visit again and your questions will be answered over the next few days. This is a small mini-series on the subject of commerce. The series will last 4 or 5 days.

It’s sad to see the abandoned mills which have been razed or which have burned to the ground, such as the one shown here. Fortunately, there are many mills which have undergone adaptive reuse and have become residentail. Some have even had their materials (bricks) re-used on the facades of new construction. Such new use of the old bricks is something that I thoroughly enjoy seeing.

A comment because I spotted this picture on vfxy themes. Your pictures shows a sad scene of decline and decay, so common here in UK too.
