September 4, 2006 - Photography as a dangerous profession

« day before | today | day after » One of the official photographers during the USA Pro Cycling Championship in Greenville, SC Every other person, in downtown Greenville this weekend, had a camera in their hand. But none were quite as macho as the official photographers during the USA Pro Cycling Championship. I was one of the thousands of spectators carrying a camera and you can look at a few my photos in the following links. I hope you enjoy the photos.

The start of the race, the leaders 100 miles into the race, and the winner (George Hincapie) coming from 2nd place to pass and win the race in the last lap.

great pic! i loved seeing these guys…it looked pretty cool to be hanging off of a motorcycle taking pics!!! lucky for me i live on one of the roads that they kept coming by so i got to see them do all their laps without having to leave my comfort zone!

The October 2006 issue of Road Magazine (I picked it up at the race) has interviews with 4 photographers who shoot for the magazine. Pretty interesting. Hanging off the back of a swerving motorcycling while trying to concentrate on shots is definitely not for the faint of heart.

Those guys got some amazing shots, though. Not all of them shoot from the back of the motorcycle though. Many ride ahead and get into position to catch some photos as the bikers come, then leap frog each other and repeat. It’s no less macho though. All I could think about on Sunday is how I need a different lens. Either of my two lenses seemed inadequate when put up against the artillery carried by the big guns.
