August 25, 2006 - Bicycle policeman

« day before | today | day after » A bicycle policeman in Greenville, SC I took this photo, of a bicycle policeman, Thursday afternoon. What makes this photo special is that a Thursday morning news article quoted residence and business owners asking for the return of the bicycle police. Now that is responsive. Way to go Greenville!

On a personal note, a picture of me was on the front page of the Greenville news associated with the article mentioned in this post. Although the article highlighted several issues which downtown Greenville faces I wanted everyone to know that I was not one of the complainers.  I was one of those who “took pains to note that the problems are obvious results from the success of downtown”. Now I have to admit that I agree with the complaints about noise from the motorcycles.

Interesting. We don’t have a bicycle policeman here.
Have a nice weekend Denton :)

Very interesting! I take it most common thieves escape via rollerskates and bicycles LOL!

Kudos to the quick responsiveness. It’s good to know that somewhere in the world authorities thake the community seriously.

Denton, I’m dying to know, in yesterday’s photo, what is that bathtub-like thing at the back of the car?

Hi Denton! So does the bicycle policemen usually catch the runaways?

Congratulations on your image making the front page! That is so great! Why would Greenville have disbanded the bike police in the first place? I recall years ago when I lived in San Francisco the first appearance of bike police. People liked the idea.

Thanks for your visit and your comments.

Tanty, bicycle police are an extention of foot patrols. It gives to community a since of security and lets the bad guys know the police are present. A police car response may be more effecent but can never replace the physical presense.

Edwin, IMHO most crime downtown is committed by teenagers on foot, vagrants, or drunks. As a result I think a bicycle pursuit is superior to a police car.

Lisi, sorry it has taken a bit to respond. I am taveling and have sporatic Internet access. I will have to ask to be sure but I think the bathtub hold the batteries.

Anne, I am sure I would come closer to catching a kid if I were on a bicycle rather than on foot. After a certain age we need all the help we can get

Marie, thank you. I assume the bicycle police were disbanded due to cost savings and a false assumption that cameras will prevent crime.  There is very little you can do downtown which is not recorded on a camera.  However that does not stop the stupid criminal.
