June 30, 2006 - Protecting art - aka “Gumby plays soccer”

« day before | today | day after » Protecting art

This piece of art, which the plaque says is untitled 2002-2003, apparently needed some protection. Just a couple of days ago the grass around it was removed and replaced by plants. Also the art now has three signs around it saying “Look but do not touch” … The art is in Falls Park in downtown Greenville, SC.

PS: My wife calls this art Gumby and a reader (Lisi from Hong Kong) commented that it looked like a World Cup player ready to kick to ball, so I think the art should be named “Gumby plays soccer”. What do you think?

maybe it’s the World Cup fever…I see a running man lifting his foot up getting ready to kick… ;-)

Odd that it should be attracting so much touching.

Lisi, this art work has been the talk of my friends and we have come up with many descriptions. So not so flattering. But no one has mentioned a soccer player ready to kick. Maybe this is why the US has been eliminated from the world cup.

Nerissa, the kids would climb on it. The art has not drawn much positive comments but it has drawn a lot of people who want to touch it. I even touched it and I wonder if there was a mistake made in placing it off limits to touching.

Yes, a red Gumby…. I was thinking exactly the same. If only it could be bent to different shapes like gumby!
