The foundation wall for the Vardry McBee Mill is shown in the photo on the left. In the photo above the foundation wall starts on the left and runs most of the photo next of the walking path. There is a plaque and information at the site which is in Falls Park on the Reedy River. The plaque says “Foundation Wall for the Vardry McBee Mill built in 1816-1817″.
I went out today at lunch specifically to take these photos as a follow-up to yesterday’s post. Even though it is not the same mill mentioned in yesterday’s post I found it interesting. What interested me was the term “grist mill”. So I Googled the term and obtained the above artist painting on a plate. If anyone knows the definition of “grist mill” please share it in a comment. Note that the photo of the plate was found on the web page for an artist named Donna-Louisa Reenstra.

grist is grain to be ground, the grist mill would be where grain, be it corn, flour, etc, would be ground up into the rough or fine powder used in baking or cooking, basically a grist meal is an old wheat or corn processing plant
Here’s one in Illinois

My grandfather had corn ground here in the early 1900s.
Here is a grist mill from the late 1700”s. You’ll often see products made from this mill sold even today, at places like Mast General Store. It’s the Old Mill of Guilford, near Greensboro.
